Getting Started

How do I install Akhna?
Akhna is available on the Mac App Store. You'll need a Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 or later) running macOS 15 or newer. A TestFlight beta is also available for early access to upcoming features — see the link on our homepage.
How do I import documents?
Three ways: (1) Click the import button in the sidebar and select files. (2) Drag and drop files directly onto the sidebar. (3) Set up a watched folder — Akhna will automatically import new files added to that folder.
How long does indexing take?
About 1 minute for a typical set of 5-10 documents. Akhna processes files concurrently and indexes chunks as they're ready. You can start asking questions while indexing is still in progress.

Troubleshooting

The model download seems stuck
AI models are large (1-5 GB). On slower connections, the download may take several minutes. If it appears stuck, try quitting and relaunching Akhna — the download will resume where it left off.
Answers are slow or the app uses a lot of memory
Try switching to a smaller model in Settings. The 3B model works well on 8GB Macs, while the 8B model needs 16GB+ for comfortable performance. You can change models at any time without re-indexing your documents.
My PDF didn't import correctly
Akhna works best with PDFs that contain embedded text (most digital documents). Scanned PDFs are processed with on-device OCR, which may be less accurate — especially for handwritten text, complex layouts, or low-resolution scans.
Citations seem wrong or missing
Citations are generated by the AI model based on the retrieved document chunks. While we've optimized the prompts for accuracy, smaller models may occasionally miscite. Always click the citation link to verify the source text. If answers seem low quality, try switching to a larger model.

Privacy & Data

Where is my data stored?
All data is stored in Akhna's sandboxed container on your Mac (under ~/Library/Containers/). Nothing is sent to any server. Deleting the app removes all data.
Can I delete my documents?
Yes. Right-click any document in the sidebar and select "Delete". You can also delete all documents from the import menu. Both the extracted text and the search index entries are removed immediately.
